Vision Foundation for Strategic Studies held a focus group discussion to strengthen youth political and civic participation, identify the gaps and factors affecting their engagement, and explore possible solutions.

The focus group took place on Monday, 12 October 2026, with the participation of a number of young people. Discussions examined the challenges facing youth participation, with particular attention to the social, economic, and individual factors contributing to their limited involvement in political and civic activities.

Participants highlighted growing disillusionment among young people with political and civic participation. Inequality, as well as fears associated with societal pressures and political parties, were also identified as factors discouraging their engagement.

Unemployment was identified as one of the main obstacles facing young people. As a result, a considerable number of young people leave Sulaymaniyah Governorate for other governorates in Iraq and other governorates within the Kurdistan Region in search of employment. This trend was highlighted as a loss for Sulaymaniyah Governorate.

The discussion also revealed that young people are not given sufficient opportunities to play a role in political and civic activities. They are often excluded from meetings and denied opportunities to participate in discussions. Participants also noted the absence of meaningful dialogue between young people and officials and decision-makers.

The findings of this focus group will contribute to Vision Foundation for Strategic Studies’ plans to advance local governance across various sectors.
