The Impact of Misinformation on Election Campaigns Was Discussed

28 July 2025

With the participation of representatives from Iraq’s Independent High Electoral Commission, the Journalists Syndicate, the Metro Center, legal experts, and several specialists, Vision Foundation organized a focus group titled: “Misinformation, Disinformation, and Hate Speech in Election Campaigns.”

The discussion addressed the sources and formats of misinformation and disinformation, which are often disseminated by political parties, individuals, media outlets, organizations, and other entities—mainly through social media platforms. Social media was highlighted as a primary source for spreading false and misleading news, and the harmful impact of this on voter trust during election campaigns was thoroughly explored.

Participants offered several key recommendations, including launching awareness campaigns through educational institutions, providing essential guidance and directives to journalists via organizations and syndicates, and adopting several necessary mechanisms.

Vision Foundation’s goal in holding this focus group is to prepare a strategic study on the spread of misinformation and hate speech, especially during election periods. Based on the gathered data, discussions, and suggestions, an action plan will be developed to address the issue within relevant institutions.
