Developing joint projects—especially initiatives capable of practically employing the opportunities and capabilities of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region in the green and carbon economy sectors—alongside cooperation in research and policy, formed the core of a meeting between a representative of the Vision Foundation and the Director General of the Carbon Economics Company.

On Sunday, September 6, 2026, a representative of the Vision Foundation for Strategic Studies met in Baghdad with Engineer Haider Qasim Al-Darraji, Director General of the General Company for Carbon Economics, which is affiliated with the Iraqi Ministry of Environment. The meeting addressed the importance of the carbon economy, the participation of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region in carbon markets, and involvement in the COP31 climate change summit.

During the meeting, discussions covered the development of the carbon economy, carbon credits, and the opportunities for Iraq and the Kurdistan Region to participate in carbon markets.

Another segment of the talks focused on the importance of establishing a reliable Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) system, and the role of this system in developing carbon emission reduction projects.

Opportunities for cooperation in research, policy, institutional capacity building, and joint project development were another topic of discussion, with a particular focus on initiatives that can practically utilize the opportunities and capabilities of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region in the green and carbon economy.

In another part of the meeting, they discussed coordination and opportunities for participation in the COP31 climate change summit in 2026. The goal is to showcase capabilities, experiences, and relevant projects, as well as to expand opportunities for cooperation and networking with international institutions and partners.

The meeting was part of the Vision Foundation for Strategic Studies' efforts to strengthen cooperation with national institutions and to transition from research and policy recommendations toward practical initiatives and projects in strategic areas.
