Important Meeting Held on Tanjaro River Pollution and Measures to Reduce Its Environmental Impact

A meeting was held at the Sulaymaniyah Environment Directorate to discuss the city's environmental situation and the pollution of the Tanjaro River, during which key challenges and obstacles related to the issue were highlighted.
The meeting took place on Monday, June 22, 2026, under the chairmanship of Mr. Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, with the participation of a number of government officials and relevant stakeholders.
Discussions focused on environmental pollution issues, particularly the pollution of the Tanjaro River, which was described as a serious environmental threat.
During the meeting, Mr. Qubad Talabani stressed that the Tanjaro issue constitutes both an environmental and public health crisis affecting people's lives and well-being, not only in Sulaymaniyah but also in many other parts of Iraq.
Amanj Kakarash, Head of Projects at the Vision Foundation for Strategic Studies, participated in the meeting and presented the Foundation’s perspectives and projects regarding the issue, as well as proposed steps for identifying effective solutions.
At the conclusion of the meeting, it was decided to establish a specialized committee composed of relevant authorities in Sulaymaniyah Governorate. Another committee was also tasked with implementing urgent measures to mitigate the environmental impacts of the pollution.
