Vision Foundation Mayoralty of Baghdad Take Steps to Address Tigris River Pollution and Improve the Capital’s Environment

The Vision Foundation for Strategic Studies and Mayoralty of Baghdad discussed the environmental situation in Iraq’s capital, the causes of pollution in the Tigris River, and potential solutions to address the problem and mitigate its impacts.
The meeting was held in Baghdad on Thursday, June 18, 2026, with the participation of the Deputy Mayors of Baghdad and representatives of the Vision Foundation.
During the meeting, Mayoralty of Baghdad officials warned of the growing pollution of the Tigris River and its negative consequences for public health and the urban environment. They stressed the need for rapid, science-based measures to contain and reduce the problem.
The participants also highlighted the importance of expanding green spaces across Baghdad as one of the most effective ways to improve the city’s climate and reduce the effects of climate change.
For its part, the Vision Foundation presented its environmental studies and projects, as well as a set of recommendations and roadmaps it has developed to address pollution in the Diyala and Tanjaro rivers.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the Mayoralty of Baghdad called for closer cooperation with the Vision Foundation in preparing joint studies and projects aimed at finding sustainable solutions to Baghdad’s environmental challenges. The Mayoralty also requested the Foundation’s support in seeking international partners and donors to help fund and implement environmental initiatives.
