The lack of financial support from banks to the housing sector is one of the main challenges facing residential development. Investors propose reopening federal bank branches as a solution, along with government backing for the sector. Vision Foundation for Strategic Studies is facilitating a dialogue among stakeholders on how to encourage banks to invest in housing.
On April 11, 2026, Vision Foundation for Strategic Studies held an open discussion involving housing sector investors in Sulaymaniyah, private banks, and government entities, aiming to address mortgage-related issues and improve financial support for the sector.
During the session, the foundation presented a summary of a study it had published, which found that there are 192,000 housing units in Sulaymaniyah, a large portion of which are vacant, while 30,000 renters are still in need of housing.
The study also highlighted risks facing investors in Sulaymaniyah. According to the data, 40% of investors have only one project, making their capital vulnerable to risks. This calls for a comprehensive review of the banking system and stronger support for the housing sector.
Among the investors’ proposals to address housing finance issues is the reopening of federal banks in Sulaymaniyah, along with government guarantees to build trust in investment and reduce financial risk.
